GERRY – Chautauqua County officials are reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention as crews enter the height of their work season.
In an interview with WNYNewsNow Chautauqua County Public Facilities Director Brad Bentley stressed that drivers should first and foremost pay attention to flaggers and road work signs.
“First recognize the signs, once you see the signs slow down, take your time, nothing is that important that someone should get hurt,” said Bentley. “As you approach the work zone look for additional signs, flag persons, that will help direct you safely through the work zones, and just take your time.”
The official also explained another major safety problem his crews face is distracted driving.
“If you are on a cell phone, put it down immediately,” said Bentley. “You shouldn’t be on it in the first place, but as you approach a work zone it is even more imperative because you have people out in the roadway surface that are in an extreme danger; we just need you to be mindful.”
Bentley reminded drivers that those who choose to speed, text and drive, or disobey road crew’s instructions could face fines. His workers are trained to take down license plates and report reckless drivers to police.
