State To Roll Out New License Plate Design

ALBANY – New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is asking residents to vote on the next state license plate design that will go into effect next spring.

The vote started Monday and runs through Sep. 2. There are five options to choose from.

The license plate design with the most votes will replace the current “Empire Blue & White Plates” and with the newer “Empire Gold” plates.

The new license plate will roll out in an April 2020 replacement program. When drivers renew registrations over the next two years, those with plates older than ten years will be issued new plates.

A $25 replacement fee will be added to the cost of the registration renewal. Customers may keep their current license plate number for an additional $20 fee.
