MAYVILLE – A Chautauqua County Grand Jury has indicted a Georgia woman in connection with a fatal, wrong-way crash on Interstate 86 in the Town of North Harmony in July.
A Chautauqua County Court Clerk tells WNY News Now that Heather Capell, 32, was indicted Oct. 15 on charges of second-degree vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter – recklessly causes death, and driving while ability impaired by a combination of drugs.
Capell was taken into custody by the Erie Police Department after she was treated for injuries sustained in the crash at a Erie hospital.
She was then, deputies report, arraigned as a fugitive from justice in Erie City Court and has been remanded to the custody of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. July 1 after a wrong-way driver hit a vehicle traveling west on the highway.
51-year-old Bradley Wakefield, of Cattaraugus, suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
I-86 westbound from exit 8 (Route 394) to exit 7 (Panama-Stedman Road) was closed for nearly six hours while crews worked the scene.
The Ashville Fire Department, Bemus Point Fire Department, Chautauqua County Emergency Services, New York State Police and Chautauqua County Fire Police assisted sheriff deputies at the scene.
