AVENEL, NJ – The “blue light special” is heading toward extinction.

The K-Mart store in Avenel, New Jersey is scheduled to close permanently on Saturday.

Once that happens, there will only be three stores remaining in the country.

Those locations are: Westwood, New Jersey; Miami and Bridgehampton, New York.

K-Marts used to be a powerhouse in the U.S., with more than 2,000 stores nationwide.

However, they, as well as other retail stores, have fallen victim to Walmart, Target and Amazon.

Sears Holdings, which owned K-Mart, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2018.

Sears and K-Marts have shut down more than 3,500 locations over the past decade-and-a-half, including our local location in West Ellicott. A Target is expected to open operations at the spot, in the future.
