WASHINGTON, D.C. – Explaining the unexplainable and looking at something that could be out of this world. That’s what Defense officials are trying to understand when they’ve received reports and sightings of unidentifiable flying objects. For the first time in nearly five decades, congressional members held a hearing on UFO’s.

Extraterrestrials and science fiction are popular in pop culture and some unexplained sightings spark our curiosity; Questioning if there is anything else besides us in this vast universe. This is the first time in nearly 50 years congress has held a hearing on UFO’s, also known as UAP’s or unidentified aerial phenomena. Recently, officials from the Defense Department and Naval Intelligence shared declassified footage.

“These remained unresolved for several years,” said Scott Bray, the deputy director of Naval Intelligence.

One video shows glowing triangles captured on night vision cameras. These triangles were later determined to be drones. They also released footage of something they still can’t explain what it is, yet.

“Aircraft that is operating in a US navy training range that has observed a spherical object in that area and as they fly by it, they take a video,” said Bray describing the video.

Last year, intelligence released a report stating there were 144 unexplained encounters from 2004 to 2021. Since then, that number has climbed to 400.

“UAP’s are unexplained, it’s true but they are real,” said Rep. Andre Carson (D- IN). “They need to be investigated.”

Some worry these UAP’s are potential national security threats and could be new technologies developed by our adversaries.

“When it comes to foreign nations weapons systems and sensors, known unknowns are those features that we don’t fully understand yet,” said Rep. Rick Crawford (R- AR).

While UAP’s spark our imaginations, Defense officials said they will continue working on understanding these unexplained sightings.
