Buffalo Shooting Six Months Later

ALBANY, NY (WENY) – Six months ago, on May 14, an 18-year-old gunman from Broome County carried out the racially motivated shooting at Top’s Grocery Store in Buffalo, claiming the lives of 10 Black people and injuring 18 others.

Monday, the families of those victims are still hurting from the loss of their loved ones.

Gov. Kathy Hochul visited Buffalo, highlighting the anniversary while also making an announcement about economic development in the city. She said that New Yorker’s are strong and that they have and will continue to lift each other up through the aftermath of this tragedy.

“We came together as one after this tragedy. It won’t define us forever. But people know to look at this time and say how we came through what has to be so uniquely known as the Buffalo way,” she said.

In July of 2022, the gunman was indicated by a federal grand jury on 27 counts, including 14 hate crimes and 13 firearms offenses. He faces the death penalty or life in prison if convicted at the federal level.

He has also been convicted on state domestic terrorism and hate crime charges. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
