JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office invited a drug expert to the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel Monday morning to speak on the dangers of a certain drug, marijuana.

PhD expert Kevin Sabet spoke out to dozens about the marijuana business, which he thinks is moving too far too fast.

“To the average American, it’s very controversial because the average American has been fed this stuff from the industry for the past 40 years,“ explained Saber. “I wish the average American read the New England Journal of Medicine.”

Sabet estimated that in the past 30 years, 10 times as many people use the drug.

He also brings up other legal drugs that are far worse.

“It starts with the drugs that are the most accessible,“ stated Sabet. “And the drugs that are the most accessible are alcohol, marijuana, and to some extent now vaping nicotine. It used to be cigarettes but not anymore. You talk to a high school student cigarettes yuck smoking’s disgusting, smoking marijuana, well that’s healthy. That’s the change we’ve had, it’s profound.”

The marijuana business has changed a lot in the past few years.

“I’m not talking about the old marijuana, I’m talking about the new stuff, the products that we see,” explained Sabet. “THC infused candies, cookies, gummies, ice cream, sodas, the potency levels have just bloomed. It’s an order of magnitude or more different now.”

In the end, the marijuana industry is growing at an exponential rate.

“Among youth marijuana is becoming more addictive,“ stated Sabet. “Much more addictive than alcohol or nicotine products, including vaping. And this was a study that just came out last year, that shocked NIH researchers that did it.”

Sabet has been a part of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Advisor for both controlling parties. He also has written a book on the subject.
