(WNY News Now) – Legislator Jesse Gooch and Myrla Gibbons Doxey, Deputy Director of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (NCDMH), commend students for their creative mental health advocacy efforts.
Niagara County – At a recent legislative meeting, Legislator Jesse Gooch and Myrla Gibbons Doxey of NCDMH celebrated the accomplishments of students from the Orleans and Niagara Career and Technical Centers’ Graphic Communications Programs. The students were recognized for their outstanding contributions to a community messaging campaign that aims to raise awareness about mental health and substance use concerns.
The students’ innovative designs for flyers and bus bench advertisements promote the County’s 24-hour crisis phone line at (716) 285-3515 or 988 as a vital resource for those in need. Gibbons Doxey praised the students for their ability to connect with their peers through their messaging, acknowledging that young adults can uniquely understand and address the challenges faced by their contemporaries.
Susan Staddon, the Graphic Communications Instructor at Niagara Career and Technical Center, emphasized the significance of students engaging with the community and commended the Department of Mental Health for involving students in this important project. Karen Krull, the Graphic Communications Instructor at Orleans Career and Technical Center, expressed the students’ pride in contributing to a life-saving initiative for their community.
