PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In an effort to promote empathy and awareness of the challenges faced by individuals living in poverty, the SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Human Development and Family Relations (HDFR) is organizing a poverty simulation event. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms of the Angell College Center. Faculty, staff, students, and community members are all invited to participate.
Participants in the simulation will take on the roles of either individuals living in poverty or professionals supporting those in poverty. Dr. Lolita Kincade, associate professor and HDFR chair, expressed the department’s commitment to promoting well-being and community support. She emphasized that poverty significantly affects the well-being of individuals and families.
The poverty simulation is designed to be an immersive experience, offering participants insights into the daily realities of poverty. Dr. Kincade highlighted the benefits of hands-on learning and its relevance to various campus constituents and the wider community.
Participants can expect to:
Increase awareness of poverty
Reflect on their behaviors while experiencing poverty
Explore the challenges associated with poverty
Discuss opportunities to combat poverty within their communities
Learn about ways to effect change in their roles as human services, social work, and counseling professionals
Dr. Kincade encouraged a minimum of 40 participants and welcomed all interested individuals to join. She emphasized the value of engaging with the topic of poverty.
The event will be facilitated by Denise Sypek, director of the North Country Teacher Resource Center, in collaboration with social work and counseling professionals. Dr. Kincade’s role will be to guide participants in processing their experiences, examining shifts in their perspectives, and exploring the applicability of what they have learned.
