(WNY News Now) – Governor Hochul Proclaims November as New York State Apprenticeship Month, Marking the Flourishing Network of Over 17,500 Registered Apprenticeships across 900 Programs Statewide.
Albany – In a move to fortify New York’s position as a leader in apprenticeship programs, Governor Hochul has declared November as New York State Apprenticeship Month, recognizing the exceptional growth of the state’s registered apprenticeships. With an investment of $2 million, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) is set to expand these initiatives further, particularly through Direct Entry Pre-Apprenticeship Programs, signaling a commitment to workforce development and addressing skill gaps.
New York boasts one of the nation’s largest apprenticeship programs, with a robust network of over 17,500 registered apprentices engaging in nearly 900 programs sponsored by over 600 entities statewide. The last year alone witnessed an impressive surge in participation, with 4,651 new apprentices, the inception of 53 additional programs, and the inclusion of 8 new trades, encompassing contemporary fields such as software development and art operations.
Traditionally associated with the construction industry, registered apprenticeships have evolved to encompass diverse sectors. Organizations like the Manufacturers Alliance of New York and iconic brands like Tiffany & Co. have recognized the value of apprenticeship programs, paving the way for an expanded framework that meets the demands of an evolving job market.
A regional breakdown of apprenticeship programs showcases the widespread adoption of this educational pathway:
Capital: 119 programs
Central: 109 programs
Finger Lakes: 157 programs
Long Island: 83 programs
Mid-Hudson: 60 programs
Mohawk Valley: 49 programs

To commemorate Apprenticeship Month, NYSDOL Commissioner Reardon will embark on a statewide tour, engaging with participants from various Registered Apprenticeship programs. This includes visits to The UA Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 22 in Western New York, McLane Trucking in Central New York, and the Mason Tender Training School in New York City. The tour’s highlights will be shared on NYSDOL’s social media platforms.
As part of an extensive social media campaign, NYSDOL will release informative videos aimed at assisting businesses in understanding the benefits of apprenticeship programs. This outreach aims to encourage businesses to leverage apprenticeships as a strategy for building a skilled talent pool and mitigating potential worker shortages. Interested parties can access further information on apprenticeships by subscribing to NYSDOL’s Biz Buzz e-newsletter, circulated to over 75,000 recipients monthly.
The $2 million investment, channeled through Direct Entry Pre-Apprenticeship Programs, aims to underpin the growth of registered apprenticeships throughout the state. The funds will be accessible through the Direct Entry Pre-Apprenticeship Request for Applications, facilitating targeted support for aspiring apprentices.
In tandem with the New York State Education Department, which oversees the instructional component of these programs, NYSDOL continues its efforts to diversify apprenticeships into new sectors across the state. Businesses keen on initiating their apprenticeship programs are encouraged to explore NYSDOL’s apprenticeship resource webpage for comprehensive guidance.
This multifaceted approach underscores New York’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce, facilitating career growth for its citizens, and providing businesses with the adept personnel required to navigate the challenges of an ever-evolving economy. The $2 million injection into apprenticeship programs marks a strategic investment in the state’s future, ensuring it remains at the forefront of workforce development and innovation.
