(WNY News Now) – New York – New York has passed two crucial bills aimed at addressing the rising cost of prescription drugs and expanding patient access to essential medications. The legislation introduces measures to increase transparency in drug pricing and allows pharmacists to administer a broader range of medications for mental health and substance use disorders.
New York State has taken decisive steps to tackle the challenges posed by the high cost of prescription drugs. Legislation S.599-A/A.1707 mandates manufacturers of certain prescription drugs to notify the Department of Financial Services of any proposed wholesale cost increases. This move enhances transparency by ensuring the state is informed about pricing changes, promoting accountability in the pharmaceutical industry.
Simultaneously, Legislation A.6779-A/S.6337-A empowers pharmacists to administer a wider array of medications for mental health and substance use disorders. The legislation not only expands access to crucial treatments but also emphasizes safety measures by requiring pharmacists to communicate the administration of medication to prescribing physicians. This proactive approach aims to enhance patient safety and medical coordination.
Governor Hochul expressed her commitment to alleviating the financial burden on New Yorkers, stating, “Too many New Yorkers are struggling with the high cost of prescription drugs – and I am committed to doing everything in my power to help. This legislation will increase transparency and safety for all New Yorkers.”
Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, RPh, emphasized the significance of the legislation in reducing barriers for patients, particularly in underserved areas. The bills collectively mark a meaningful effort by New York State to improve access to essential medications, ensuring that patients can manage their diseases effectively.
