In the aftermath of the structure fire that erupted on Allen Street on May 26th, Anastasia and Russell Sheldon, a couple who were displaced by the disaster, reflected on what truly matters, expressing gratitude for their companionship and the support they’ve received from the community.

The couple recounted their experience of waking up to the fire that had consumed two of the apartment units above them. Once they realized the gravity of the situation, they grabbed their pets and whatever belongings they could secure as they fled to safety.

However, once they returned to the building the following Tuesday to gather their belongings, they realized that most of their personal effects had been subjected to water damage, and that which was salvageable had been stolen.

The personal items stolen included hundreds of dollars worth of jewelry, multiple gaming consoles, a laptop, a tablet, and even the ashes of their deceased cat.

The couple has been managing, but are emotionally devastated by the tragedy. They expressed immense gratitude at the support they’ve received from the community, both from organizations like the Red Cross, who gave them $640 for temporary housing at a hotel until they could find a temporary residence, as well as individuals who have donated clothing, food, toiletries, and other necessities.

Above all, they remain thankful for the safety of themselves and their pets, recognizing that while the loss of their things and sentimental items is devastating, their strength and ability to weather the storm comes from the love and support they provide each other.

The couple currently has a gofundme set up to raise donations to help them replace their lost belongings and get their lives back on track. Those looking to donate to this cause can visit here to help.
