Dunkirk’s “Summer Better Than Others” Day Camp Returns to Camp Gross
The City of Dunkirk is excited to announce the return of its beloved “Summer Better Than Others” Day Camp at the picturesque Camp Gross in Cassadaga, New York. Open registration for this highly anticipated annual event is now underway.
Starting from June 6, parents and guardians can register their children weekdays from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the recreation office on the first floor of the Stearns Building. Dunkirk residents are encouraged to sign up by June 10, while non-residents can begin registering on June 17.
Sponsored by the Dunkirk Youth Bureau and Recreation Commission, this dynamic camp invites children aged 5 to 11 for a summer packed with fun, learning, and adventure. Each day features a wide array of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, lifeguard-supervised swimming, nature classes, theatre, and special events. On rainy days, engaging indoor activities ensure that the fun never stops.
Camp sessions run Monday through Friday, rain or shine, from 8:05 AM to 3:55 PM, with five one-week sessions available:
- Session I: July 8 – July 12
- Session II: July 15 – July 19
- Session III: July 22 – July 26
- Session IV: July 29 – August 2
- Session V: August 5 – August 9
Camp fees include lunch, snacks, and supervised bus transportation, with stops at four central locations throughout Dunkirk. Costs are $50 per child for Dunkirk residents ($40 for additional children) and $60 per child for non-residents ($45 for additional children). Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and local residents or businesses are welcome to sponsor a child.
Junior counselor positions are open for Dunkirk residents aged 12 to 15, offering a unique opportunity to gain leadership experience at no charge. Older teens, aged 16 and up, can apply for counselor positions, with applications available on the second floor of the Stearns Building.
Each year, over 200 campers delight in up to two weeks of unforgettable experiences. The week culminates in a performance of camper-created skits, showcasing their creativity to family members.
