Lottery Opens June 13 for New Yorkers Eager to Experience Camping for the First Time

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the return of its highly popular First-Time Camper Program for the summer of 2024. This initiative, now in its fifth year, aims to introduce New York families to the joys of camping and outdoor activities, offering a fully equipped campsite at no cost.

“DEC’s introductory program for first-time campers is back, and I am honored to welcome even more New Yorkers to explore our beautiful campgrounds in the Adirondacks and Catskills,” said Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar. “The program not only provides a unique opportunity for people who have never camped before to enjoy a night under the stars but also engages them in activities like fishing, hiking, boating, and bird watching.”

The First-Time Camper Program is designed to simplify the camping experience, particularly for families from underserved communities who may lack the necessary equipment and knowledge. The DEC supplies all the essential gear, including tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, lanterns, and firewood. Clean bathrooms and hot showers are conveniently located nearby.

A key feature of the program is the presence of Camping Ambassadors, who will assist new campers with setting up their campsite and provide a “Camping 101” lesson. This hands-on guidance ensures that participants have a stress-free and enjoyable introduction to camping.

The program’s lottery system opens on June 13 and closes on June 20, 2024. Interested families can register online for a chance to secure a spot at one of the participating campgrounds in the Adirondacks and Catskills. Campers will be selected randomly from the lottery entries.
