Yvonne Wu, an ex-NYPD officer, faces 27 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Jamie Liang and wounding of Jenny Li in 2021.
NEW YORK – In a significant legal development, New York Attorney General Letitia James has announced the guilty plea of former NYPD officer Yvonne Wu, 34, of Staten Island, for the October 2021 shooting incident that resulted in the death of Jamie Liang and the injury of Jenny Li. Wu, who was off-duty at the time, pleaded guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the First Degree and one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree before Acting Kings County Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun.
On October 13, 2021, Wu went to the Brooklyn home of Jenny Li, a person she was acquainted with, and used her NYPD-issued service weapon to carry out the shooting. Jamie Liang was killed, and Jenny Li was wounded in the attack.
Wu is currently held without bail and is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on August 28, 2024. The plea agreement suggests a cumulative prison sentence of 27 years—22 years for the Manslaughter charge and five years for the Attempted Murder charge, to be served consecutively. Additionally, Wu will face five years of post-release supervision, has waived her right to appeal, and will be subject to an order of protection for Ms. Li.
This case was investigated by the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which mandates a thorough review of any incident involving a police officer or peace officer that results in death, whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty.
