(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, NY – The City of Jamestown will receive $1.5 million from the 2024 Bridge NY Awards to fund the Minnow Brook Culvert Rehabilitation project. This initiative aims to enhance public safety and fortify critical infrastructure against extreme weather conditions.

The Minnow Brook Culvert Rehabilitation project focuses on replacing a deteriorating culvert that is essential for maintaining access to a heavily traveled city street and the UPMC Chautauqua Hospital. This project is vital for the health and well-being of Jamestown residents, ensuring uninterrupted access to local medical facilities and essential services along Water Street.

Water Street: A Hub of Vital Services

Water Street is home to key organizations and businesses, including:

  • St. Susan Center: Serving daily meals to vulnerable individuals, including the unemployed, homeless, children, seniors, and those facing physical, mental, and emotional challenges.
  • Mental Health Association (MHA) of Western New York: Providing advocacy, support, and referrals for individuals struggling with mental illness and substance abuse.
  • Community Helping Hands: Offering emergency assistance through a thrift store and workforce development programs in partnership with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
  • Western New York Urology: Delivering specialized urological care to the community.
  • Jamestown Electro Plating: A historic business serving the aerospace, automotive, electronics, and construction industries since 1924.

Project Impact

The failure of the culvert would significantly disrupt access to UPMC Chautauqua, Western NY Urology, and other facilities on Water Street, leading to potential flooding, water damage, infrastructure disruptions, and compromised traffic flow. These issues pose safety risks to the community. The Minnow Brook Culvert Rehabilitation is essential for maintaining equitable access to emergency care, essential services, and employment opportunities for those relying on these entities.

The City of Jamestown remains dedicated to enhancing public safety and ensuring the reliability of critical infrastructure.
