(WNY News Now) – Albany, NY — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has proposed new regulations for select trout streams to protect wild populations and optimize fishing opportunities. Public comments are being accepted until September 9, 2024.
Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar stated, “These changes reflect our commitment to adaptive management of trout streams, ensuring both conservation and recreational benefits.”
The proposal stems from the 2020 New York State Trout Stream Management Plan, which aims to manage and restore trout populations while enhancing recreational angling. The plan categorizes streams based on management objectives and helps anglers locate their preferred fishing experiences.
Key Proposed Changes:
- Creating a wild-quality reach on Camden Creek
- Establishing a stocked-extended reach on Ischua Creek
- Shortening stocked-extended regulations on Cayuta Creek, Goose Creek, and Wappinger Creek
- Eliminating stocked-extended regulations on Cayadutta Creek and West Branch Limestone Creek
- Clarifying regulations for Nassau and Suffolk county streams
- Aligning catch-and-release brook trout season with brown and rainbow trout season on the Carmans River
- Extending year-round brown and rainbow trout season on select Suffolk county tidal streams
The DEC encourages anglers to review and comment on these proposals. Feedback can be submitted via email to regulations.fish@dec.ny.gov with the subject “Trout stream regulations” or by mail to the Inland Fisheries Section, NYSDEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4753.
