(WNY News Now) – Jamestown – A press conference discussing a plane crash that occurred at around 10:12 a.m. Monday morning, August 5th, highlighting the swift and effective response from emergency services and shedding light on the incident.
Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel introduced Chautauqua County Airport Manager Shannon Fischer, who revealed that the crash occurred following the realization that the plane had lost control of its electronics and could no longer communicate. This realization by workers on the ground allowed for a swift response once the plane crashed 200 feet short of the runway.
Chautauqua County Emergency Services Director Noel Guttman noted that, due to the jet fuel that had been set ablaze, which caused the massive black smoke pillars that many ongoers had noticed, responders initially fought the flames with airport firefighting foam.
Thankfully, the crash did not result in any casualties. Both pilots were able to walk out of the crash, with one pilot being sent to UPMC for treatment while the other requested being flown to ECMC. The county is currently optimistic that the pilots will survive, but have not made an official statement at this time, so as not to be premature in their conclusion.
Now that the accident has been resolved, the airport will cooperate with the relevant agencies to clean up the debris and determine when the airport, which was closed following the incident, will be able to reopen.
