(WNY News Now) – Hamburg – An Angola man received a state prison sentence for recklessly killing another driver in a high-speed collision on Route 5 in Hamburg.

Anthony Rydzewski, 41, of Angola, was sentenced to an indeterminate term of 3 to 9 years in state prison for his role in a fatal car crash in Hamburg earlier this year. State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller handed down the sentence, which includes a $5,000 fine, the maximum allowed under the law.

The crash occurred on the morning of February 28, 2024, when Rydzewski was driving northbound on Route 5 at a high rate of speed. His reckless driving led to a collision with another vehicle, killing 37-year-old Jenny E. Zuhlke of Hamburg on impact. Rydzewski sustained injuries and was transported to ECMC for treatment.

Following the incident, Rydzewski fled the state but was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He was returned to New York in April 2024, after waiving extradition.

In July 2024, Rydzewski pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the Second Degree, a Class “C” felony, without the option of a reduced plea. Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane praised the efforts of the Town of Hamburg Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit in securing the conviction.

Assistant District Attorney Bethany A. Solek of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau prosecuted the case.
