(WNY News Now) – Erie County – A West Seneca man, Jason M. Mitchell, has been sentenced to nearly three decades in prison for repeated violations of an order of protection, culminating in a violent home invasion.
Jason M. Mitchell, 44, was sentenced to 26 1/3 to 29 years in state prison after being convicted of multiple counts of burglary, criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child. The sentencing, presided over by State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges, follows a jury trial in April where Mitchell was found guilty of violating an order of protection issued for a domestic violence victim.
Between September and November 2020, Mitchell disobeyed court orders by repeatedly contacting the victim through social media and sending third parties to her home. On November 26, 2020, Mitchell broke into the victim’s home, using a sledgehammer to shatter a door. During the invasion, the victim sustained a broken wrist while trying to barricade herself and her two children inside.
The charges against Mitchell include two counts of first-degree burglary and multiple counts of criminal contempt. Final orders of protection were issued for the victim, her family, and witnesses, effective until 2062.
Mitchell’s prosecution was led by Assistant Chief Gina M. Gramaglia and Assistant Chief Andres D. Ortiz. Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane praised the West Seneca Police Department and victim advocates for their efforts in bringing the case to justice.
