(WNY News Now) – ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Shyasia Kelis McCullough, 23, and Malik Shameer McCray, 24, both of Rochester, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including the robbery of a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) letter carrier, theft of mail, and possession of USPS mailbox keys. The charges carry a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelyn M. Hartford, the incident occurred on June 5, 2023, when a USPS letter carrier was robbed of his keys, including a mailbox key and keys to secured buildings, while delivering mail along Lake Avenue in Rochester. Postal Inspectors reviewing surveillance footage identified a suspect and a vehicle tied to the crime. Four days later, on June 9, Gates Police conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle near the Westgate Post Office. McCray was driving, with McCullough as a passenger.
A search of the vehicle revealed stolen personal checks, USPS keys, cell phones, ski masks, and fraudulent financial documents. Evidence recovered from McCray’s cell phone included a conversation between the defendants discussing the robbery and a photo of the stolen mail keys. Investigators believe the stolen keys were used for further theft and fraudulent financial activity.
This investigation was led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Rochester Police Department, and Gates Police Department.
McCullough and McCray are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
