(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southeastern Wyoming County, southwestern Livingston County, and north-central Allegany County in western New York. The warning is in effect until 5:30 PM EDT today, September 21.
At 4:42 PM, radar indicated a severe thunderstorm located near Portageville, roughly nine miles west of Letchworth State Park. The storm is moving southeast at a speed of 15 mph, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and the potential for quarter-sized hail.
Hazardous Conditions: The primary threats from this storm include damaging winds and hail, both of which are expected to cause property damage, particularly to vehicles, roofs, siding, and trees. Residents in the storm’s path should take immediate precautions, as these conditions could lead to further damage.
Areas Affected: The storm is expected to impact several communities, including Letchworth State Park, Portageville, Nunda, Pike, Castile, Silver Springs, Gainesville, Short Tract, Hermitage, and Fillmore. Those in these areas are advised to move to the lowest level of a sturdy building and avoid windows.
In addition to hail and wind damage, the storm is bringing heavy rainfall, which may cause flash flooding. The NWS advises drivers not to travel through flooded roads and to be vigilant of rapidly changing conditions.
Safety Reminder: Continuous cloud-to-ground lightning has also been reported with this storm. Lightning is one of nature’s deadliest hazards, and anyone outdoors should seek shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
