(WNY News Now) – As hunting season kicks off and fall hiking remains in full swing, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) urges outdoor enthusiasts to prioritize safety while enjoying shared public lands.

New York – With cooler temperatures and colorful foliage drawing hikers, nature lovers, and hunters alike to New York’s public lands, the DEC is encouraging everyone to practice safety measures this fall and winter. From the Adirondack and Catskill Parks to State Forests and Wildlife Management Areas, both hunters and hikers are frequenting the same recreational spaces. The DEC stresses the importance of being prepared and respectful of each other during this busy season.

Safety Tips for All Outdoor Enthusiasts:

  • Communicate your plans: Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. Update them if your plans change.
  • Dress for visibility: Wear bright clothing, like blaze orange or pink, to ensure you’re easily seen from a distance.
  • Know your surroundings: Familiarize yourself with the trail you plan to hike or the area where you intend to hunt. Bring a map and a light source.
  • Pack essentials: Ensure you have the 10 hiking essentials, including a first aid kit, water, and layers appropriate for changing weather.
  • Keep pets leashed: If you’re bringing a pet, keep them on a leash to avoid conflicts with wildlife or other visitors. A brightly colored collar or leash helps make them more visible.

While it may seem concerning to encounter hunters while hiking, the DEC reassures the public that hunting is statistically very safe, thanks to the state’s rigorous hunter safety program. Accidents are exceedingly rare, but precautions like wearing visible clothing and following trails reduce risks even further.

For those planning a trip, there are numerous DEC-maintained trails that are accessible for hikers of all abilities, and many of these areas allow hunting as well. Users can explore trail maps, hunting areas, and other recreational resources through DECinfo Locator or the NY Fishing, Hunting & Wildlife App.

By working together and following simple guidelines, both hikers and hunters can continue to enjoy the beauty and adventure of New York’s outdoor spaces safely.
