(WNY News Now) – A bipartisan coalition of 46 Attorneys General, led in part by Pennsylvania’s Attorney General Michelle Henry, is pressuring the FCC to fix a loophole enabling unchecked robocalls and spam texts.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry joined 45 of her counterparts nationwide in urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enhance the Robocall Mitigation Database, aiming to curb the daily flood of robocalls and spam text messages inundating residents.

Since the database’s inception in 2021, voice service providers have been required to register. However, gaps in oversight have allowed bad actors to exploit the system by submitting unverified, incomplete, or outright false information, while providers face no meaningful accountability.

“Every day, Pennsylvanians are being inundated with spam robocalls and text messages,” Attorney General Henry said. “We have made it clear that robocalls are not welcome here, and I am proud to stand with my colleagues in this coalition to announce an important action in the fight against illegal, nuisance robocalls.”

The coalition has proposed stricter scrutiny of provider information, enforcement of deadlines, and penalties for non-compliance. The suggested reforms would effectively block bad actors from infiltrating the U.S. telephone network, significantly reducing unwanted communication.
