(WNY News Now) – New York State Thruway (I-90) has been closed to all westbound traffic due to severe lake effect snow.

The New York State Thruway Authority announced an immediate westbound closure of I-90 from Exit 59 (Dunkirk-Fredonia-NY Route 60) to the Pennsylvania state line due to severe lake effect snow. This measure follows the closure of I-90 in Pennsylvania from the New York state line to I-79, leaving no accessible routes westward in the region.

All vehicles traveling westbound on I-90 must exit at Exit 59. Motorists are advised to expect significant delays and to seek alternate routes.

Adding to the challenges, a ban on tandem trucks and empty commercial vehicles went into effect at 3 p.m. on I-90 from Exit 53 (Buffalo-Downtown) to the Pennsylvania state line. This precaution aims to prevent potential accidents and road blockages during the storm.

The Thruway Authority urges drivers to remain updated through official resources:

With visibility reduced and road conditions deteriorating rapidly, officials emphasize the importance of caution. Alternate routes may be overwhelmed as drivers adjust to the restrictions, compounding traffic concerns across the region.

Key Points for Motorists:

  • All westbound traffic on I-90 must exit at Exit 59.
  • Tandem trucks and empty commercial vehicles are banned west of Buffalo (Exit 53).
  • Check official sources frequently for updates.
