(WNY News Now) – The City of Dunkirk remains under a strict travel ban as heavy snowfall continues to blanket the region. The ban, in effect since earlier this week, restricts travel to essential workers only to ensure critical services remain uninterrupted.

Public Works crews have been working tirelessly overnight to clear roads. However, non-essential travel poses a significant challenge to these efforts.

Parking Regulations and Vehicle Removal

Residents are reminded to adhere to alternate parking regulations by moving vehicles to the designated side of the street by 5 p.m. daily. Non-compliance has led to numerous vehicles being buried under snow, causing dangerous obstructions for plows and emergency responders. Vehicles in violation risk being towed.

Winter Safety Tips for Residents

Winter storms can be dangerous, but being prepared can help you stay safe. Here are some critical winter storm safety reminders:

  1. Stay Indoors
High winds, heavy snow, and ice can make roads hazardous.
  2. Keep Warm
    • Wear layers of clothing to help retain body heat.
    • If you lose power, avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer to keep food cold.
  3. Stay Safe Around Ice
Be cautious of slipping on ice when outside. If you need to go out, wear sturdy boots with good traction, salt walkways, and driveways to prevent ice build-up.
  4. Inspect Heating Systems
Make sure your heating system exhaust is clear of snow.
  5. Clear Snow Safely
  • Shovel or clear driveways, sidewalks, and entrances, but avoid overexerting yourself. Take breaks and drink water.
  • Be cautious of frozen or hidden hazards under the snow, such as ice patches.
  1. Check on Vulnerable Neighbors
Check in on elderly family members, neighbors, or anyone who needs help. If you are concerned about someone, please call our communications desk at 716-366-2266 for a well-being check.
  1. Watch for Downed Power Lines
Avoid touching or approaching downed power lines, and report them.
  2. Be Careful When Driving
If you must drive as an essential worker, equip your vehicle with emergency supplies and drive slowly and cautiously.
  3. Fire Protection
