(WNY News Now) – An overflow from Dunkirk’s wastewater treatment system has released millions of gallons of partially treated sewage into Lake Erie.
The Dunkirk (C) Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) has reported a significant discharge of partially treated sewage into Lake Erie on December 9, 2024. The event, lasting 29 minutes, released approximately 2.61 million gallons of wastewater from Outfall 001A, located near Wright Park Drive in Dunkirk, NY.
This discharge occurred due to system capacity limits caused by ongoing rainfall and melting snowpack, overwhelming the collection system. While measures were taken to mitigate the impact, such as utilizing interceptor lines and wet wells to full capacity, the volume exceeded the system’s ability to contain it.
The affected waterbody, Lake Erie, includes public areas such as bathing beaches, boat launches, fishing zones, and nearby parks. The released wastewater underwent partial treatment, including disinfection, but was not fully treated before entering the lake.
The Sewage Pollution Right to Know Act requires public notification of such incidents, emphasizing transparency and encouraging community awareness. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution in affected areas and to stay informed through local updates.
