(WNY News Now) – Buffalo, NY — A Buffalo man has been sentenced to 16 years in state prison for the fatal stabbing of a 49-year-old on the city’s West Side.

Timothy A. Austin, 37, received the sentence in Erie County Court on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Judge Sheila A. DiTullio also imposed five years of post-release supervision as part of the sentence.
The charges stem from an incident on June 11, 2023, when Austin fatally stabbed Tremaine Mayfield once in the chest during an altercation on the 400 block of Niagara Street. Buffalo Police officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:00 p.m. Mayfield was transported to Erie County Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injury.
Austin pleaded guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree, a Class “B” violent felony, on November 8, 2024. Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane commended Buffalo Police Detectives Adam Stephany and Ray Krug for their investigative efforts, which led to the conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Rebecca L. Schnirel of the Homicide Bureau and Ryan M. Flaherty of the Major Crimes Bureau.
