(WNY News Now) – Quick action by Niagara County deputies saved a man trapped in an overturned, water-submerged vehicle, leading to his arrest on charges of driving while impaired by drugs.

Wheatfield, NY — On Sunday, December 29, 2024, at approximately 1:57 PM, Niagara County Communications responded to a 911 report of a motor vehicle accident on Cayuga Drive Extension in the Town of Wheatfield. The single-vehicle collision left a 2009 Honda Fit overturned in a ditch, partially submerged in water.

Witnesses reported a citizen’s attempt to break the vehicle’s window to assist the trapped driver. Deputies S. Virk and K. Kennedy quickly arrived on the scene, finding the car’s passenger compartment rapidly filling with water. Using department-issued rescue tools, the deputies broke a rear window, opened the door, and extricated the sole occupant, identified as 40-year-old Robert Prange of Wheatfield.

Prange suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. During the investigation, authorities determined Prange was under the influence of drugs. He was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs and a traffic violation.

Prange was released on appearance tickets pending further legal proceedings. Emergency responders, including the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company and Tri-Community Ambulance, provided support, alongside members of the New York State Police.

As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
