(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo has issued a cold weather advisory warning for several counties from 7 PM Tuesday to 11 AM Wednesday due to dangerously cold wind chills.
The National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo, NY, has issued a cold weather advisory, effective from 7:00 PM Tuesday, January 21, through 11:00 AM Wednesday, January 22. The advisory covers Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Northern Erie, and Genesee counties, with expected wind chills ranging from 15 to 20 degrees below zero.
Bitterly cold wind chills are expected during this period, with temperatures as low as 20 below zero. These extreme conditions pose a significant risk for frostbite on exposed skin within just 30 minutes. Residents are urged to take precautions if they must be outdoors, as prolonged exposure can lead to serious health risks.
Impacts: The wind chill factor will make temperatures feel dangerously cold, causing frostbite in as little as 30 minutes if skin is not properly protected. Wind chills of 15 below zero or colder are predicted, increasing the risk for both hypothermia and frostbite. The National Weather Service advises residents to limit outdoor activities, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours when wind chills will be at their lowest.
Safety Instructions: Residents in affected counties are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, ensure that all exposed skin is covered to prevent frostbite. Layers of warm clothing, including hats, scarves, gloves, and insulated footwear, are recommended. Anyone with medical conditions or vulnerable individuals, such as children and the elderly, should be particularly cautious during this cold weather event.
Additional Information: The cold weather advisory is part of an ongoing weather pattern that includes below-freezing temperatures across much of upstate New York. As wind chills continue to plummet, those in the advisory areas should be vigilant and take action to protect themselves from the harsh conditions.
