(WNY News Now) – Dunkirk, NY – January 20, 2025 – The City of Dunkirk Police Department, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office, Department of Public Works (DPW), and Dunkirk Fire Department (DFD), has issued a travel advisory effective at 4:15 PM today. The advisory is in response to deteriorating road conditions caused by strong winds and heavy, blowing snow, and is expected to remain in effect until further notice.
Travel Advisory Details
Non-essential travel within the City of Dunkirk is strongly discouraged due to hazardous conditions, including drifting snow, downed trees, and power lines. The advisory comes after the city’s roadways and infrastructure have been significantly impacted by the weather.
Safety Guidelines for Residents and Drivers
- Downed Power Lines: Residents are reminded to always assume that downed power lines are live and energized. A safe distance of at least 35 feet should be maintained from any downed wires.
- Traffic Signals: In the event that traffic lights lose power, drivers should treat intersections as a four-way stop to prevent accidents.
- Snow Removal: Keeping vehicles off the streets will aid in snow plowing operations and ensure emergency vehicles have clear access to the roads. Residents are urged to follow alternate parking regulations by moving their vehicles to the opposite side of the street by 5:00 PM today. Failure to comply with parking rules may result in towing, as obstructed vehicles can cause dangerous traffic conditions and hinder snow removal efforts.
The cooperation of Dunkirk residents in adhering to these guidelines is crucial for ensuring that snow removal operations proceed smoothly and emergency vehicles can navigate streets without obstruction. The Dunkirk Police Department is working closely with city agencies to maintain safety and respond to any emergencies that may arise during this weather event.
City officials and emergency responders are urging all residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary and to remain vigilant about the potential for power outages and hazardous driving conditions.
