(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – A Buffalo man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for a fatal shooting in the city’s University Heights neighborhood, Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced.

Michael A. Barnes, 37, received the sentence before Erie County Court Judge Sheila A. DiTullio. His prison term will be followed by five years of post-release supervision.
The shooting occurred on September 12, 2023, at approximately 1:51 a.m. Barnes shot 28-year-old Thomas Davis multiple times with an illegal firearm near the 3100 block of Main Street and Winspear Avenue. Davis died at the scene.
Barnes pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter, a Class B violent felony, in full satisfaction of the indictment before his scheduled jury trial in November 2024.
DA Keane commended Buffalo Police Department Homicide Squad Detectives Jerry Guilian, Erin McCarthy, and Judith Walker for their investigative work. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Hilarie L. Henry of the Special Victims/Domestic Violence Bureau and John G. Schoemick of the Major Crimes Bureau.
