(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo man has been sentenced to over nine years in prison for shooting a man during a dispute in the Town of Tonawanda last year, Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced.

Joel A. Brown, 46, received a sentence of 9 ½ years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to Attempted Assault in the First Degree, a Class “C” violent felony. He was sentenced as a second felony offender by State Supreme Court Justice Paul B. Wojtaszek on Monday.
The shooting occurred on September 9, 2024, around 4:08 p.m. in the 300 block of Kenmore Avenue. Officers from the Town of Tonawanda Police Department responded to reports of gunfire and found a 36-year-old male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his hand and lower torso.
Emergency responders transported the victim to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) for treatment. Investigators determined that Brown shot the victim multiple times during a dispute over money, attempting to cause serious physical harm.
Brown pleaded guilty in November 2024, admitting to the charge. As part of the sentencing, a final order of protection was issued for the victim, effective until February 2036.
District Attorney Keane commended Detective Frank DiRienzo and the Town of Tonawanda Police Department for their investigation, along with the Buffalo Police Department for their assistance.
Assistant District Attorney Ryan M. Flaherty of the Major Crimes Bureau prosecuted the case.
