(WNY News Now) – DUNKIRK, N.Y. – The City of Dunkirk Police Department has issued a travel advisory effective Monday, February 17, at 7:15 p.m., due to worsening road conditions caused by strong winds and heavy, blowing snow.
Officials strongly discourage non-essential travel until further notice, as hazardous weather is expected to create drifting snow, downed trees, and power lines.
Safety Warnings & Travel Precautions
- Downed Power Lines: Assume all fallen lines are live. Stay at least 35 feet away and report them to authorities.
- Traffic Signals: If power outages affect signals, treat intersections as four-way stops to prevent collisions.
- Vehicle Parking: Residents must follow alternate parking regulations by moving vehicles by 5 p.m. to avoid impeding snow removal and emergency access. Illegally parked vehicles may be towed if they obstruct plowing or emergency response.
Keeping streets clear will help the Department of Public Works (DPW), Dunkirk Fire Department (DFD), and emergency crews maintain public safety.
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and limit travel for their safety. Updates will be provided as conditions evolve.
