(WNY News Now) – DUNKIRK, NY – A 50-year-old Dunkirk man was taken into custody on the evening of May 21 following a warrant check that led to additional charges related to drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence.
According to the Dunkirk Police Department, an officer on patrol around 9:15 p.m. near Ruggles Street and Cliffstar Drive observed a man on a bicycle who was confirmed to have active warrants through the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office. The man, identified as Alexander Santiago of Dunkirk, was approached by police in an attempt to place him under arrest.
During the encounter, officers say Santiago tried to discard items identified as drug paraphernalia. As officers attempted to retrieve the items, Santiago allegedly attempted to damage and kick them, leading to additional charges.
Santiago was charged with Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor, and Tampering with Physical Evidence, a class E felony. He was subsequently turned over to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office on the existing warrants. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
