(WNY News Now) – A morning fire at a commercial property in Lakewood was traced to an improperly discarded cigarette, fire investigators confirmed Monday.
LAKEWOOD, N.Y. — On Monday, August 4, 2025, at approximately 7:33 a.m., the Lakewood Fire Department and Lakewood-Busti Police Department responded to a reported structure fire at 401 East Fairmount Avenue in the Village of Lakewood.
First responders quickly arrived on scene and were able to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.
Due to the nature of the incident, the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team was called in to determine the fire’s origin and cause. Following a thorough investigation, officials concluded that the fire started on the exterior of the building and was caused by a discarded cigarette.
Authorities remind the public to properly dispose of smoking materials and to avoid discarding them near buildings or flammable materials, especially during dry conditions.
