Heavy Rain Triggers Flood Threat in Buffalo and Surrounding Areas
(WNY News Now) – ERIE COUNTY, NY — The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Flash Flood Warning for north central Erie County, effective from 8:07 p.m. on August 6 until 12:15 a.m. on August 7.
According to the alert, between 1 and 2 inches of rain had already fallen by the time the warning was issued, with up to an additional inch possible. The rainfall, produced by strong thunderstorms, has caused flash flooding to begin or is expected to begin shortly.
Affected areas include:
- Buffalo
- Cheektowaga
- Kenmore
- Tonawanda
- Amherst
Hazard: Flash flooding caused by heavy thunderstorms

Impact: Flooding of creeks, streams, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying or poor drainage areas
Residents in the warning area are urged to take immediate precautions. The National Weather Service advises:
“Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.”
Campers, hikers, and anyone near streams or creeks should avoid water pathways as rapidly rising levels can pose a life-threatening risk.
