(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. – Federal prosecutors announced the arrest of a 53-year-old El Salvadorian national who has been charged with illegally reentering the United States after prior deportations and a felony conviction.

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo stated that Miguel Angel Ruiz Guevara was charged by criminal complaint with re-entry of removed aliens and re-entry of previously deported or removed aliens following a felony conviction. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Smith, investigators encountered Ruiz Guevara on August 29, 2025, at a hotel in Bowmansville, NY. During questioning, Ruiz Guevara was unable to provide valid documentation allowing him to remain in the United States, presenting only an El Salvadorian passport.

Authorities determined that Ruiz Guevara had previously been ordered removed from the U.S. in 1992, 2005, and 2011. Records also show that he was convicted of felony DUI in September 2004, following multiple offenses.

Ruiz Guevara appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy and was ordered detained.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a federal initiative targeting illegal reentry, cartel activity, and transnational criminal organizations. The investigation was conducted by U.S. Border Patrol, led by Patrol Agent-in-Charge David Banks.

Officials emphasized that a criminal complaint is only an accusation and that Ruiz Guevara is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
