(WNY News Now) – The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is warning motorists to avoid nonessential travel as heavy lake effect snow and high winds create dangerous driving conditions.

LITTLE VALLEY, N.Y. — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a travel advisory issued earlier on December 30 remains in effect due to ongoing lake effect snow across the region. Combined with gusty winds, the snow is causing reduced visibility, snow drifts, and hazardous road conditions, particularly in the northern half of the county.

Officials are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. While the advisory does not mean all roads are officially closed, motorists are encouraged to delay trips that can wait.

For those who must travel, the Sheriff’s Office advises leaving extra time, ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, carrying a winter emergency kit, and staying alert for rapidly changing weather and snowplow operations.
