EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique, which requires a person to gently tap on specific meridian points. It’s a fairly new approach, but in recent years it has gained a lot of attention due to its effectiveness and accessibility.
It has a proven track record for helping with stress, anxiety and even PTSD.
Before starting a tapping sequence, we need to identify what we want to tap on and rate the intensity of this feeling or emotion on a scale from zero to ten. Then, we can move on to form our first setup statement.
A setup statement is a sentence in which we acknowledge the main issue and create acceptance within ourselves. The idea in EFT tapping is that forming this setup statement is the first step. For example, while living in a busy city, you might feel tension and stress in your body. You could say something like:
“Even though I feel this tension and stress in my body, I choose to accept this feeling and love myself anyway.”
Repeat this statement three times while tapping on the karate chop point. Once this part of the process is complete, we move on to the next part.
Next, we start tapping on the top of the head while repeating short reminder phrases, for example:
“I feel a lot of tension in my forehead.”
Tap this point 5–7 times, next move to the eyebrow point, saying another reminder phrase, such as:
“This tension makes me feel stressed.”
Continue to the following points, remembering to say the reminder phrases at each point:
- Side of the eye
- Under the eye
- Under the nose
- Chin point
- Collarbone point
- Underarm point
Reminder phrases are short sentences closely related to the main issue. It’s good practice for it to be as specific and personal as possible.
Once the entire sequence of points is completed, re-rate the intensity of the issue on the scale from zero to ten and see if there has been any improvement.
The key to EFT tapping is consistency. It’s important that you dedicate a time, either in the morning or in the evening, and go through your tapping routine uninterrupted. Many people notice results right away, while for others it might take some time. However, this technique is free for everyone to use and is completely safe.
If you are struggling with more complex issues, you might want to reach out to a certified EFT tapping practitioner to help guide you through the process. Sometimes it can be daunting or overwhelming when we start working on deep-rooted issues, and the help of a qualified EFT tapping practitioner can be invaluable. A practitioner can hold a space where you can truly express your deepest thoughts or emotions.
Another benefit of EFT tapping is that it can be used anywhere and at anytime. You don’t need to schedule a special appointment—you can literally start tapping wherever you are and begin feeling better on the spot. It only takes 5–10 minutes of tapping to feel a difference. This means it can be used at work after a stressful meeting, or whenever you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work you need to get done that day.
