Strong southwest winds with gusts up to 50 mph are expected across several Western New York counties, prompting a Wind Advisory from the National Weather Service.

(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Wind Advisory effective from 8:00 p.m. Friday through 1:00 p.m. Sunday, January 11, for much of Western New York. The advisory was released at 12:50 a.m. on January 10 through NY Alert.

According to NWS Buffalo, southwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour are forecast, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour. The advisory includes Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Genesee, Wyoming, and Chautauqua counties.

Forecasters say the strong winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, including trash cans and holiday decorations. Tree limbs could be brought down, and isolated power outages are possible due to the gusty conditions.

Drivers are urged to use extra caution, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles such as trucks, buses, and SUVs, which may be more difficult to control in strong crosswinds. Residents are also advised to secure outdoor items to reduce the risk of damage or injury.

The advisory remains in effect until early Sunday afternoon, and residents are encouraged to stay alert for any updates or additional weather statements from the National Weather Service.
