(WNY News Now) – The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Western New York, warning of accumulating snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday evening.
The advisory was issued at 12:44 p.m. on Wednesday, February 5, and remains in effect from 7 a.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday, according to NY Alert and the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo.
Forecasters say a combination of widespread snow and localized lake-effect snow is expected across the region. Total snowfall accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are anticipated, with locally higher amounts possible in hilltop areas south of Buffalo. Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility.
The advisory covers Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties.
According to the NWS, an Arctic front will move through the area Friday morning, bringing widespread snow showers. Snowfall is expected to become more localized Friday night into Saturday as lake-effect snow develops. Winds will strengthen behind the front late Friday evening and continue into Saturday, increasing the potential for drifting snow on roadways.
Officials warn that travel conditions may become difficult, particularly during the Friday evening commute. Snow-covered roads and limited visibility are expected during periods of heavier snowfall and blowing snow.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling, allowing extra time to reach destinations. Residents are also encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions as the storm develops.
The National Weather Service is asking the public to submit snowfall reports through its official website or social media platforms to assist with ongoing weather monitoring.
