(WNY News Now) – A bicyclist suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene Sunday night in Dunkirk, according to the Dunkirk Police Department.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. — Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a bicyclist seriously injured on Sunday evening, March 8.

According to the Dunkirk Police Department, officers assigned to the 3–11 shift responded at approximately 8:57 p.m. to Lincoln Avenue near West Talcott Street for a report of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. Members of the Dunkirk Fire Department also responded to the scene.

When officers arrived, the suspect vehicle had already fled the area. The bicyclist was located on the side of the roadway with injuries described as serious. Police provided medical aid until fire department personnel arrived.

The victim was transported to Erie County Medical Center for further treatment.

Investigators determined that the bicyclist was struck by a white SUV that continued southbound on Lincoln Avenue after the collision. Police said the vehicle initially pulled over following the crash. However, two to three occupants reportedly exited the SUV, briefly examined the damage to their vehicle, then returned to the SUV and drove away without checking on the injured bicyclist.

Patrol officers and detectives are currently reviewing multiple pieces of surveillance footage and conducting follow-up interviews with witnesses as the investigation continues.

The Dunkirk Police Department is asking anyone who may have video footage of the incident or the suspect vehicle, or anyone with information about those involved, to contact Dunkirk Police Headquarters at 716-366-2266. Authorities said callers may remain anonymous.
