(WNY News Now) – GOWANDA, N.Y. — A Flood Warning has been issued for Cattaraugus Creek, with minor flooding expected to impact areas near Gowanda from this evening through late Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service Buffalo NY issued the alert at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday, warning that water levels along Cattaraugus Creek are forecast to rise above flood stage overnight.

According to officials, the creek is expected to exceed the 10-foot flood stage just after midnight, cresting at approximately 11.0 feet before gradually receding below flood stage by Wednesday morning. As of 2:15 p.m., the water level was recorded at 3.44 feet, with bankfull stage identified at 8.0 feet.

The warning specifically impacts areas along the creek near Gowanda, including parts of Wyoming, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Erie counties.

Minor flooding is anticipated primarily along the right bank of the creek, extending from a half mile to one mile downstream from Gowanda. These areas are largely industrial and commercial. Officials also advise residents to monitor conditions along Thatcher Creek in Gowanda and near Sunset Bay at the creek’s outlet into Lake Erie, where additional issues could develop.

The projected crest is comparable to a historical event, nearing the 10.9-foot level recorded on February 26, 1961.

Safety officials are urging motorists and residents to exercise caution. Drivers are reminded not to attempt to cross flooded roadways or bypass barricades.

“Turn around, don’t drown,” remains a key safety message, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

The Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. The next update from the National Weather Service is expected by approximately 3:15 a.m.
