(WNY News Now) – BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 22-year-old Cheektowaga man has been arraigned on murder and weapons charges following a fatal shooting in Buffalo’s Genesee-Moselle neighborhood, according to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office.

Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced that Angel Gonzalez-Rondon was arraigned April 8, 2026, before Buffalo City Court Judge Samuel P. Davis Sr. on one count of second-degree murder, a Class A-I felony, and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony.

Prosecutors allege that on April 6, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Buffalo Police responded to a reported shooting in the 200 block of Walden Avenue near St. Louis Avenue. A 21-year-old male victim was transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities claim the defendant intentionally caused the victim’s death by shooting him with an illegal firearm.

Gonzalez-Rondon also faces additional charges stemming from an incident that occurred shortly before his arrest. According to prosecutors, on April 7, 2026, around 12:52 a.m., officers observed the defendant driving near Broadway and Bailey Avenue. When police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, he allegedly fled.

Authorities allege the defendant operated the vehicle without a valid driver’s license and drove recklessly, creating a substantial risk of serious injury to others. The charges include reckless endangerment in the second degree and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, both Class A misdemeanors, as well as aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree and reckless driving. He is also accused of multiple traffic violations, including speeding, failing to use headlights, failing to signal, running a red light, and operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Police say the defendant was taken into custody after stopping on Harlem Road in West Seneca, where he allegedly attempted to flee on foot.

Gonzalez-Rondon is scheduled to return to court for a felony hearing on April 10, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. He was held without bail on the homicide charge, while nominal bail was set on the related reckless endangerment case.

If convicted of the top charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

The District Attorney’s Office credited the Buffalo Police Department for its work in the ongoing investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Frank A. Strano of the Homicide Bureau.

As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
