EAST OTTO – A Cattaraugus County man is facing assault charges after sheriff deputies said he struck his girlfriend with a hammer and used his hands to obstruct her breathing on Monday.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jeffrey J. Irving, 36, Thursday morning at his East Otto home.

Irving also allegedly took his girlfriend’s cell phone away so that she could not call from help.

Investigators charged Irving with third-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Irvine was issued appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in the Town of East Otto court in August.
