New Yorkers Choose New State License Plate Design

ALBANY – New Yorkers have finally chosen a new license plate design.

The plate features some of the state’s most iconic landmarks: the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan Skyline, Niagara Falls, a mountain range, and a long island lighthouse.

It also has an outline of the state, showcases New York’s colors blue and gold; and displays the state’s motto: “Excelsior,” which is Latin for “ever upward.”

New Yorkers had two weeks to vote on five potential designs. Three of the finalists featured a solo lady liberty. The fifth showed a bridge named for late former Governor Mario Cuomo. It tied for last place.

The new official license plate will be available beginning next April. It replaces the current blue and gold plates issued since 2010.
