WASHINGTON – American hiring is still strong amid signs the global economy is slowing.

The United States added 136,000 jobs in September.

The unemployment rate was at 3.5 percent. That’s nearly a 50-year low.

The number of discouraged workers, or people who’ve stopped looking for work, also fell by more than 100,000 in September.

The economy benefited from 100,000 new positions from the U.S. Census.
