BUFFALO – A Bishop from Albany will be leading the Buffalo Catholic Dioceses after Bishop Richard Malone’s resignation this week.

On Wednesday, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Edward Scharfenberger as the next Apostolic Administrator.

“I feel a little bit like the neighbor down the block and I realize that this family has been suffering quite a bit in recent months and years,” said Scharfenberger during a Wednesday press conference. “My heart just goes out to you, and what I see is a need for a tremendous amount of healing, good conversation, honest conversation and openness.”

Scharfenberger says he will continue to lead and serve the Diocese of Albany as well.

The appointment took effect immediately.
