CONEWANGO VALLEY – An apartment building was destroyed following an early morning fire in Conewango Valley on Monday.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office says as of 8:30 a.m. they are still trying to verify that everyone got out of the building.

Sheriff Jim Quattrone explained that a total of six people lived in the structure; four downstairs and two upstairs.

The Sheriff says all downstairs got out of the building, but the two living upstairs were likely at a different location. The department is now trying to verify their whereabouts.

Ellington Fire Chief Stephen Rexford says multiple fire crews from across the area responded to 5521 Rt. 62 just after 3:30 a.m.

“We called for additional tankers and established two water sources in the creek nearby,” said Rexford. “Because it was a two story building and unsafe to get in, we called for two ladder trucks to extinguish the fire from above.”

Rexford says the two story apartment building will likely be demolished.

Investigators still do not know what caused the fire. Crews are not able to search the building because it is unsafe to enter.
